PRESENTATION
The Department of Chemistry and Chemical Technologies (CTC) of the University of Calabria (UNICAL) is a teaching and research institution and was one of the founding departments which launched UNICAL in 1972, then called the Department of Chemistry. Undergraduates at CTC receive training in not only the traditional fields of Chemistry, such as Analytical, Inorganic, Organic, and Physical Chemistry, but also advanced areas such as Material Sciences. At the postgraduate level, CTC offers courses and research training in two doctorate programmes: the first in Translational Medicine is offered in conjunction with the department of Pharmacy, Health and Nutritional Sciences and the second doctorate degree in Physical and Chemical Science and Technology of Materials is organized in cooperation with the Department of Physics.
We are proud to have hosted several Marie-Curie scholars within these doctorate programmes: one doctorate fellow currently enrolled in the "Bernardino Telesio" doctorate programme is also funded by the Chebana project.
The faculty members of CTC are active in twelve lines of research: (i) Analytical Methodologies: advanced mass spectrometry, resonance spectroscopy, X-rays and crystallography; (ii) Material Material Science: synthesis and structure-properties relationship of transition metal complexes for optoelectronic devices, nanotechnologies, spintronics, molecular magnets, antitumoral activities, drug delivery and photodynamic therapy; (iii) Food Chemistry: quality, safety and origin of products; (iv) Synthesis: synthesis and evaluation of molecules of pharmacological and agrochemical interest; (v) isolation and de-novo, green synthesis of nutraceuticals; (vi) catalysis; (vii) advanced materials for energy devices; (viii) complex fluids; (ix) development and application of density functional theory in molecular biology and catalysis; (x) gel-based proteomics; (xi) NMR techniques in partially oriented systems; (xii) natural fibers, natural composites and new plastic electro-chromic materials.
The Department of CTC is located on the UNICAL campus of "Arcavacata" and the laboratories and lecture facilities are distribute in eight buildings, covering a surface of more than 12,000 square meters.
Research funding is provided by the Italian Ministry of University Research and by Regional, National, European and also international bodies.
The Department is known worldwide for the quality of research published in peer-reviewed international journals, for the number of international patents in the aforementioned different research areas and for the reputation of CTC Faculty and Research Fellows who are often invited to international conferences. According to a recent analysis published by the national research evaluation board (ANVUR), the Department of CTC is that with the best research performance at UNICAL. The Spanish Consejo Superior de Investigationes Cientifica (CSIC) has, also, positioned UNICAL as 27th of the 237 Universities throughout Italy.
