Francesco worked on several national projects and organized several National Congresses (SIMP 2002 and SGI 2012) and Workshop (on ‘Quantitative models in sediment generation’, 2010). The main field areas of research are southern and central Italy, Spain, Morocco, Greece and Czech Republic. The main areas of research specialization are sedimentary geochemistry, clay mineralogy, sedimentology, provenance and diagenesis of clastic sediments, palaeogeographic, palaeotectonic and paleoclimatic reconstructions, weathering processes of crystalline rocks, thermal and burial history of sedimentary basins, interplay of tectonics, erosion and sedimentation, regional geology.
2001-2003 partner of the Cosenza Unit of the national project PRIN-COFIN "Age and features of Verrucano type deposits from northern Apennines to Betic Cordilleras: constraints for the paleogeographic and structural evolution of the Alpin Chains of the western Mediterranean area.
2006-2008 partner of the Potenza Unit of the national project PRIN-COFIN "The clastic Cenozoic sedimentation of the circum-Mediterranean Chains: constraints for the paleogeographic and paleotectonic evolution".
Research Project POR Calabria 2000-2006, National Research Council (CNR-IRPI) of Cosenza. Research Project PRIN/COFIN 2009-2011, University of Calabria. PON Research Project (PON R&C 2007-2013), University of Calabria.
Teaching contract within the Master of II level titled "ESTIA - ESPERTO IN TECNOLOGIE INNOVATIVE PER L’AMBIENTE " (PON03_00341/F1), as part of the SILA Project, for the Basic Training Module in "Mitigation of natural hazards" GEO/02 (UD 1.3 - Geological and Thematic Cartography and Tectonic Structures and their influence on risks and the environment - 15 h; UD 1.4 - Processes of rocks alteration, classification of the weathering degree and relations with landslides - 5 h), University of Calabria.
Collaboration to National Council of Research (CNR-IRPI â?? Cosenza) about relationship between chemical and mineralogical composition and mechanical properties of fine grained sediments, and weathering processes of crystalline rocks.
Convener at the Section TS1.5 of the 86° Congress of the Italian Geological Society (SGI). Partecipation to several national and international congress on geology.
Field trip in Spain-Morocco October 2003. Interdisciplinary scientific collaboration and strong partnership working with researchers and professors of the University AbdelMalek Essaadi (Morocco), University of Alicante, University of Madrid and University of Granada (Spain), University of Göttingen (Germany), Waseda University (Japan) and other Italian Universities, underpin all of the Francesco’s research, culminating in several international publications and numerous conference presentations to date.
Francesco received the ‘Luigi dell’Anna’ 2009 Award sponsored by the Associazione Italiana per lo Studio delle Argille (AISA). In 2012 Francesco received the ‘Giorgio Dal Piaz’ Award sponsored by the Società Geologica Italiana (SGI). Francesco, further, received the Reviewer Certificate by Basin Research (Wiley) for reviewing activity in 2016, and the Certificate of Recognition by ACS (American Chemical Society) Publications Awards for ACS publications reviewing activity in 2015. Francesco is currently a reviewer of several national and international journals. Francesco obtained the national scientific qualification as Full Professor for the competition sector 04/A2.
